Preface to <The Language of Facebook>
Origins
The birth of *The Language of Facebook* stems from the reflections I have shared online over the past fifteen months. These writings, whether lengthy or brief, profound or simple, are all mirrors of the mind in the present moment. I am grateful to my disciple Elaine Fok for her meticulous efforts in compiling these scattered fragments into an e-book, allowing readers to peruse and contemplate them at their leisure.
The title *The Language of Facebook* does not merely signify that these words were first published on social media. Rather, it carries a deeper meaning:
– “Face”represents the visage of all sentient beings,
– “Book”symbolizes the vessel of wisdom,
– “Language”conveys the voice of compassion.
May these words flow like a clear spring into the hearts of readers, bringing a touch of clarity and awakening.
On Content
This book revolves around four major themes:
1. Compassion and Kindness
All beings possess Buddha-nature, yet it is obscured by ignorance and self-attachment, leading to suffering. True compassion knows no boundaries or partiality. As stated in the book: “The Avalokiteshvara manifests in intelligent forms, bestowing blessings upon all, granting eternal youth and abiding Buddha-nature.”*May we all treat others with tenderness and view the world through eyes of kindness.
2. Mindfulness and Meditation
When the mind is scattered, the world appears chaotic; when the mind is still, all things become clear. Mindfulness is not an escape from reality but a way to live fully in the present. “Stop! I’ve had enough—cultivating the mind is more important than cultivating wealth!” This cry is both a reflection on our restless era and an invitation to return inward.
3. Resilience and Perseverance
Spiritual practice is like rowing against the current: progress requires relentless effort. Adversity need not be feared but embraced as a forge for the will. “Break free from the shackles of the self, transcend the limits of mediocrity”—this demands not only persistence but also fearless faith in truth.
4. Respect and Gratitude
All accomplishments arise from the kindness of others. From parents and teachers to the mountains and rivers, everything deserves our heartfelt thanks. Gratitude to the Great Sun Tathagata for the light and wisdom bestowed”—this gratitude should translate into action: treating others with kindness and cherishing the present.
The Purpose of Writing
Most of these writings were spontaneous, unpolished expressions. Yet it is precisely this rawness that brings them closer to the truth of the mind. Some may ask, “Why compile online fragments into a book?” My answer is: Words are like wind, easily scattered and hard to gather; only when collected can they settle and endure. In this fragmented age, may this book offer readers a quiet corner to reflect, savor, and turn inward.
Acknowledgments
My thanks to all who have interacted with me online—your feedback has given these words deeper meaning. My gratitude to Ms Elaine Fok for her diligent editing, stringing scattered pearls into a cohesive whole. Above all, I am indebted to the teachings of past masters, ensuring that the wisdom of the Dharma continues to illuminate the world like an unextinguished lamp.
Finally, may this book serve as a small bridge, helping you cross the river of affliction and reach the shore of awakening.
